Joint Degree in

International Relations

Universitas Indonesia x University of Queensland

Background

The International Undergraduate Program on International Relations UI is established to address dynamic global challenges. Through an immersive learning experience combining academic activities and cross-cultural exchanges across two countries, this program develops graduates with strong international relations expertise, global awareness, and professional ethics. Each student will earn dual degrees, one from Universitas Indonesia and one from an international partner university. This aims to prepare them to excel in international arenas and contribute to both academic and practical fields worldwide.

Established in 1985, UI’s International Relations undergraduate program is among Indonesia’s most respected and competitive. The curriculum combines multidimensional and multi-level perspectives, covering International Security, International Political Economy and Transnationalism. This comprehensive approach is enriched by Global South perspectives, embracing the plurality and diversity inherent in International Relations.

Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Arts in International Relations at the University of Queensland provides a comprehensive understanding of global politics, power dynamics, and the development of the international system. Graduates become global citizens who are open-minded, culturally sensitive, and motivated to drive positive change through global engagement.

Therefore, a joint degree program between UI and UQ offers a unique platform for academic excellence, combining the strengths of both institutions. This collaboration not only elevates academic quality but also drives innovation, leadership, and global cooperation, ultimately producing outstanding professionals ready to address complex global challenges.

Alumni Testimoni

The interdisciplinary approach of International Relations at Universitas Indonesia (IR UI) to understanding global issues has allowed me to explore various themes and areas with confidence : an asset I believe is crucial in both academic and non-academic settings. Through its wide range of courses, interactive class environment, and high academic rigor, I have learned to adapt to diverse international contexts, including during my IISMA studies in London. Supported by a highly competent teaching team, my studies at IR UI have been very rewarding, enabling me to thrive and chart a path aligned with my pursuit of development work.

International Exchange Students at the Queen Mary University London (2024)

Without IR UI, I would not have had such immense opportunities for international exposure—from student exchanges and conferences to overseas competitions. Beyond providing access to global experiences, the progressive environment, curriculums, and lecturers at IR UI made adapting to international academic standards much easier. This foundation gave me the confidence to actively engage in classes with students and professors from around the world and to eventually complete my studies at SciencesPo with distinction summa cum laude honors.

Althea Karenina P. Gultom, S.Sos

International Exchange Students at SciencesPo, Paris (2024)

Somewhere between theory and debate, IR UI taught me the art of understanding. Studying within a community deeply rooted in a culture of critical thinking grounded in empathy and respect, IR UI shaped the way I think, connect, and contribute beyond borders. The programme nurtures that rare blend of critical mind and open heart — the essence of what it means to be a global citizen navigating a complex web of cultural dialogues built of respect and shared humanity.

My studies at Universitas Indonesia’s International Relations Department has supplied me with capabilities that transcend my multiple careers—e-commerce, management consulting, and now, content creation. Some capabilities come to mind: projecting future trends, communicating ideas, and critical thinking. Furthermore, the connections I made in IR UI continue to be valuable way beyond my studies.
