Departemen Ilmu Hubungan Internasional UI sebagai komunitas akademik yang unggul dan menjadi mitra Pemerintah serta masyarakat Indonesia yang kompeten dan kredibel dalam bidang Ilmu Hubungan Internasional.
OUR MISSION
1. Pendidikan
Memperkuat program akademik Ilmu Hubungan Internasional sehingga menjadi acuan nasional dan regional di bidang Ilmu Hubungan Internasional;
2. Penelitian dan Publikasi
Meningkatkan kajian-kajian dan publikasi ilmiah dalam bidang keilmuan maupun terapan, terutama mengenai Kebijakan Luar Negeri Indonesia, ASEAN, dan Asia-Pasifik;
3. Pengabdian Masyarakat
Memperluas program-program pengabdian masyarakat yang berkesinambungan terkait bidang Ilmu Hubungan Internasional yang melibatkan semua pemangku kepentingan;
4. Kelembagaan
Membangun institusi akademik yang mampu mendukung komunitas ilmiah yang kompeten dan kredibel.
HISTORY
The Department of International Relations (DHI) was officially established in 1985, with Prof. Juwono Sudarsono, Ph.D., as the first head of the department. Previously, DHI was a study program called “Regional and International Relations Studies” at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Indonesia, established in 1968.
The Department of International Relations establishment followed the context of Indonesia’s Foreign Policy expansion towards the end of the Cold War. As Indonesia took an active leadership within international politics, the need to establish a department that catered to Indonesia’s understanding and perspective toward developing International Relations in the centre of the nation occurred. Close interaction with practitioners of foreign policy and diplomacy, as well as international institutions in Jakarta, has become one of the main assets of the Department of International Relations FISIP Universitas Indonesia in developing the science of International Relations that is relevant to the dynamics of global politics as well as thick with Indonesian-ness.
The Department of International Relations also partakes in establishing the Indonesian International Relations Association. In 2014, the department also had an important role in establishing the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework Standards for International Relations Study Programs in Indonesia. In 2019, the Department of International Relations undergraduate program got its first international recognition with the ASEAN University Network.
After 14 years of organising international relations education at the undergraduate level, the Department of International Relations opened organising international relations education at the postgraduate level in 1999. Responding to the dynamics of the latest development in International Relations, the Master of International Relations Program has three areas of specialisation, namely (1) International Security, (2) International Political Economy, and (3) Transnationalism Studies.
In 2018, the Postgraduate Program held the International Postgraduate Student Conference (IPGSC) for the first time. The International Seminar, held every two years, is a critical momentum that shows the commitment of the Postgraduate Program to open up and become more actively involved in the international relations epistemic community both at the regional and global levels. As a form of institutional development, the Postgraduate Program in International Relations is now establishing a Doctoral Program in International Relations. This study program will be the first international relations doctoral study program in Jakarta, as the centre of government and the capital of ASEAN.
CHAIR'S WELCOME
As the biggest archipelago in the world, Indonesia has the potential to be explored within the international relations study. Indonesia is deemed to be the natural-born leader of ASEAN and has an important role in peacebuilding, socio-economy, and transnational issues in the region and across the globe. With the global power shifting towards Asia, Indonesia is gaining momentum to be recognised as an important player in international politics.
In light of the rising importance of Indonesia in regional and international politics, the Department of International Relations Universitas Indonesia will continue to be an excellent academic community in Indonesia’s International Relations.
Our department is establishing our doctoral program to continue the growth of issues and debates in international relations. With the support from our partners and alumni, we are going to create a diverse and competent studying environment for our future doctoral students. We also continue building collaborations with leading global institutions to offer precious academic experience in the forms of guest lecturers, research, and student exchange.
Being part of the best university in Indonesia, we have a diverse student population. We have students from all around Asia and Africa joining the course with opportunities to expand their connections beyond the academic community.
With our expertise in international relations within Indonesia’s context, we hope to continue developing our department to give students the best experience and be the centre of excellence.
