The Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, was established in 1985. The Department’s vision is to become an excellent academic community, as well as a competent and credible partner for the Indonesian Government and society in the field of International Relations. To realize this vision, the Department conducts teachings, research, and community engagement programs focusing on Indonesian foreign policy, the regional institution Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Asia Pacific region. The Department is supported by competent lecturers and researchers with expertise in International Security, International Political Economy, and Transnational Society.
The Department itself has two educational programs, comprising of Undergraduate (leading to a Bachelor’s Degree) and Postgraduate (leading to a Master’s Degree) programs. Both programs received an “A” rank (highest rank possible) from the National Accreditation Body (known as Badan Akreditasi Nasional-Perguruan Tinggi/BAN-PT in the Indonesian language) and implement a competency-based curriculum under the newly set Indonesian National Qualification Framework (known as Kerangka Kualifikasi Nasional Indonesia/KKNI). The Department’s student intake is among the most competitive in Indonesia, and its graduates work in a variety of sectors related to the Indonesian government (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Trade, State Secretariat, and local governments), foreign embassies, international institutions (e.g. United Nations Development Programs/UNDP, International Office for Migration/IOM, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugess/UNHCR, and ASEAN Secretariat), national and multinational business, higher education, research, journalism, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as well as entrepreneurship.
In addition to teachings, The Department also conducts various other academic activities. Periodically, the Department publishes an academic journal namely GLOBAL which is currently undertaking a national accreditation process. Under the auspices of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in Universitas Indonesia, the Department sponsored the establishment of various study centers, comprising of ASEAN Study Center (ASC FISIP UI), Center for International Relations Studies (CIReS) and Center for Global Civil Society Studies (PACIVIS). Due to its active participation in academic activities pertaining to the study of International Relations, the Department has become hubs for several networks, including the Network of East Asian Think Tanks (NEAT), Network of ASEAN Studies in Indonesia (NASI) and Southeast Asian Network of ASEAN Studies (NAS). Collaborating with their networks, the Department’s study centers have been very active in conducting national, regional, and global-level research and seminars which educate the public and provide a platform for cross-sector dialogues essential for policymaking.
